How the color name finder works
Every color on a screen is a mix of red, green and blue light, so there are about 16.7 million of them, and only a few thousand have names. When you pick a color, we look for the named color that looks most like it. Not the one with the closest numbers: the one that is closest to the eye.
To do that we compare colors in OKLab, a color space designed in 2020 so that equal distances look like equal differences. In plain RGB, two blues can be far apart in numbers and look the same, while a gray and a green are close in numbers and look nothing alike. OKLab fixes most of that, so the nearest name is a fair answer.
You get two answers. The common name is the closest match among names most people use: the 141 CSS color keywords and about 900 names from the xkcd Color Survey, in which visitors named over five million color samples on their screens. The most precise name comes from a list of more than 30,000 names and is usually much closer, but often more poetic.
How close is the match?
Next to every name you will see how similar the reference color is to yours. Exact match means the codes are identical. Virtually identical is a difference you would not see side by side. Very close and close are small but visible differences. Nearest name means no name sits close to your color, so we show the nearest one and say so instead of pretending it fits. The two swatches in the result let you judge for yourself.
Why the same name can mean different colors
Color names are not a standard. Mauve is a pale purple in one list and a dusky pink in another; the CSS keyword khaki is a light yellow, while khaki trousers are a dusty brown. That is why every result names its source, and every color page lists all the definitions side by side.
Questions
How do I find the name of a color?
Pick the color in the Color Explorer above, upload a photo and tap the color, or type its HEX, RGB or HSL code. The finder shows the closest common name, the most precise name from a list of over 30,000, and how similar each one is to your color.
What color is this HEX code?
Open the Enter a Code tab and paste the code, with or without the # sign. You get the color's name, its RGB and HSL values and a swatch. To name many codes at once, use the HEX to color name converter.
Can I find a color name from a photo?
Yes. Use the From Image tab or the color name from image tool. The image is read by your browser and never uploaded to a server.
Is the color name always exact?
Only when the code matches a named color exactly, and then we say Exact match. Otherwise you get the nearest name and a similarity score, so you can see how close it really is.
Is Color Name Finder free?
Yes. All tools are free, need no account and work on desktop, tablet and phone.
