Popular named colors
58 colors with their own pages: every definition across sources, similar shades, tints, color combinations and text contrast.
Where these color names come from
The library combines three openly licensed lists. The CSS named colors are the 148 keywords every browser understands, from aliceblue to yellowgreen (141 distinct names once the grey spellings are merged). The xkcd Color Survey collected names for random colors from hundreds of thousands of visitors and published the 949 most agreed-upon ones into the public domain. Color Names by David Aerne is a curated, MIT-licensed list of more than 30,000 names that gives almost every shade a unique name. The full credits and licenses are on the about page.
When a name appears in more than one list, it often points to different colors. Rather than pick a winner silently, every color page shows all definitions with the distance between them.
